BA Graphic Design Degree Show

Central Saint Martins

Short Video: ‘Everything you want to know about our show’ http://vimeo.com/5120208

Central Saint Martins is twenty years old this year. The college prides itself on being one of the most influential producers of international design talent. Each year students from the course win more D&AD awards than any other college worldwide. This year, students from the Graphic Design course are redefining the traditional template of a Degree Show. The show is taking place at the OXO Tower Bargehouse from 20 – 25 June, with the private view on Monday 22nd June. They will exhibit a diverse range of work from design, illustration, moving image and advertising. Only this year, there are a few twists.

There is no printed catalogue. Instead, there is a dynamic, expandible, infinitely more accessible and greener alternative: a very powerful website. Apart from allowing students to showcase several projects with multiple images, work from disciplines like moving image and interactive design can now share the same opportunity to impress as all the other disciplines in BA Graphic Design.

Integrated into the website and Degree Show is a text messaging system called CSMS, which will help foster a dialogue between students and visitors. Each student has a unique code that allows visitors and other students to contact each other directly. The messages will be projected real-time on columns on each floor, which will flow up through the exhibition space as well as appearing on the website and delivered to students phones.

What makes the Degree Show particularly special is that the students have set out to show how a variety of leading industries connect with Graphic Design. They’ve achieved this through setting up a week of events called ‘Little Tasks‘.

Little Tasks comprises of two parts. In the background will be student-led participatory work, where members of the public will be able to get involved and engage with the students of the course. Whilst in the foreground, there will be a team of students responding to tasks set for them by people from a very diverse range of Industries. So far, students have received tasks from British Petroleum, Why Not Associates, Design Museum, ABAKE, a Primary School in Paris and more are still coming in. Each will have a tangible outcome to be displayed in the studio as they are created. The ground floor will be a dynamic, organic, growing exhibition within the main show.

If you have not received a invitation the Industry Private View on Monday 22nd June, please send a request to Hannah Attwood-Foulds h.attwood-foulds@csm.arts.ac.uk

Little Tasks – Students PLEASE READ

Hi,

I am writing to ask for your help. The CSM BA Graphic Design degree
show committee are looking for people from the industry to set us all
‘Little Tasks’. The aim of these tasks, is for all of us to have some
fun, and to provide insight into the creative process for our
visitors.

We hope you will come and help us respond to these tasks during the
course of the degree show in a series of workshops. The front space of
the exhibition is being left open for such events. The outcomes of
these tasks will be exhibited immediately in the space, transforming
the room into its very own dynamic evolving exhibition.

We hope you can help, and send the pre-prepared email below (customise
as you wish) along with the flyer attached to anybody you know from
industry. Primarily we’d like to engage with fields outside of design
but of course we don’t want to neglect our true nature – we’d also
like to receive Little Tasks from those involved within design.

Thank you,

Tim Keeling
on behalf of Little Tasks team.

HERE WE GO:

YEAR PHOTO POSTER

YEAR PHOTO POSTERWHERE: GROUND FLOOR, BARGEHOUSE | WHEN: 9am Sat 20th Jun
The bottom floor is a big space, with a tall celing, we’ll all fit but it won’t be massive and open so bear that in mind no bringing in trucks and lorries.

We’re going to come together and have fun…and lots of it.

Despite the word on the street, fun doesn’t create itself I’m afraid, so we are going to need some creativity.

Bring an element of one of your projects to the stage. It is time to bring it all together.

Funny is good, crazy is brilliant, insane is great. Passive is frowned upon!

MAKE EACH OTHER LAUGH! (As a rough guide to work with: rolling around in uncontrollable hysterics is the aim.)

Here’s some examples:

– Lemon & Herb (Ken Jackson & Paul)

We held dinners, and the project started in Nandos.
We’d like to either

  • eat some chicken
  • dress as chickens
  • or a lemon and a & and a herb

Thechicken

-Joey Saul done a project about ‘Winos’; knowing Joe he will acquire some dirtily cheap red wine and get off his face. It could be a lovely representation of his project.

drunk-asshole

– Gao, Mel & Jason’s ‘Jammie Dodgers’ project: hhhmmm, I’m some kind of dodging jam scenario could take place, but beware my friends, if any jam gets on Staniland’s Fila jumper, its all gona kick off!

– Jostein, hasn’t done anything for Unit 14, but he is ‘Spaceman’. So he will more than likely be dressed as a Spaceman, or maybe just sing along to Babylon Zoo.

-I see that some folks worked on the ‘pigsy in space’ music video; perhaps Jostein could come in quite handy. He is the spaceman after all.

Have a look a peoples work on the CSM site and make some suggestions for each other. Hopefully everyone gets the picture, if not give me a shout. If this event isn’t FUN, then there isn’t too much point of doing it, so lets make it happen.

Here’s the link to the Facebook page, let’s get some chit chat going on it! woopass!!!!!
